I began my career in finance at the YWCA in 1972, as a part-time bookkeeper. Upon leaving there, I had spent nearly 25 years in the non-profit accounting world. I have done everything from daily deposits to corporate tax returns.

After several years of volunteering, I started the adventure of re-inventing myself. This started with becoming a care giver at Addington Place, then transferred to the housekeeping department.

Shortly after, I was back to my first love, and became the Business Office Coordinator. I have been in this position now going on 3 years, and hope to one day grow old doing it! My hobbies include shopping, cooking and working in my glass studio. I love to make glass beads and create custom jewelry.

For many years I worked in retail as manager and district manager, while living in Cleveland, Tennessee. About 9 years ago, I decided it was time for me to take some time away from retail and do something else. I traveled and spent time with my family for a couple of years, then settled back down to look for something else. In our local paper, there was an advertisement for CNA classes with the American Red Cross. I then decided to take the class, thinking the skill would be good to have because of my elderly parents. While taking the class, I realized I enjoyed the work and taking care of people. I especially enjoyed taking care of Alzheimer’s residents. My first position was with an Adult Day Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was a learning opportunity for me as well as rewarding and lots of fun. I then took a position in a nursing home/rehab facility and gained additional experience working with seniors.

I later moved to Brunswick, Georgia to be near my elderly parents. I started working at Benton House of Brunswick in March of 2013 (now Addington Place). I started at Benton House before the Community opened. It was exciting to be here at the startup. It has been my pleasure to serve our residents in many different capacities. I started out as a Resident Assistant and quickly moved to Med Tech. I was the Administrative Assistant for a while but missed the daily interaction with residents and families, so I went back to the RA position and Activities Assistant. Just like many of my co-workers, I have done everything in our community except cook (they would not want me to cook). Every day is interesting, a challenge, a learning opportunity and a lot of fun.

Eventually, I took on the position of Memory Care Coordinator and I know this is the position for me. In Memory Care we live in many different worlds. Every day is different. I enjoy the residents and the families. I enjoy making sure our residents have the best home we can give them.

I was married for 24 1/2 years when my husband passed away. We have three children and five grandchildren. God is first in my life then my family. After being single for many years, I am getting married in 2018 to a wonderful man that I met at work. He is a volunteer that has been coming to our community for about 4 years, primarily leading our weekly Bible study, as well as, volunteering for other activities. I am so excited to start this new journey in my life and look forward to seeing where God leads us.

I was born and raised in Brunswick, Ga. After spending some time in California and Louisiana, I am now back to the place I call home, and am so honored that to be working at Addington Place of Brunswick. I did not get my start with working with seniors. I worked and volunteered in various roles with children and active duty military, so the desire to serve others has always been my focus. I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, I just knew I wanted to feel good doing it, and make the lives of those I encountered better.

I graduated in 2015 with a B.A. in Human Services Management. Following graduation, I took two years to focus on raising my little boy. After rejoining the workforce, I found myself a part of the Oaks team, and within my first week, I knew I had found my purpose and passion. I truly enjoy spending my days with the amazing residents that call Addington Place of Brunswick their home.

I have been the Food Service Director and chef at Addington Place of Brunswick since April 2017. I have always had a passion and love for cooking. The small town of Willacoochee, Ga, where I grew up, is where my love of cooking began at 9 years old.

I graduated from Troy University in May 2017, with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. I am currently enrolled at Troy to receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality, Sports, and Tourism Management. I have been in the food industry for eleven years. I am also the owner of Deloise Absolute Catering.

I believe meal times are one of the most important times in each of our resident’s day. I strive to give our residents an excellent and memorable dining experience each day.

Carol Buckner - Maintenance Director

I started my career as a paraprofessional in Ewa Beach, Hawaii in 1980. After relocating to Brunswick, Georgia in 1983, I began working as the Daycare Director for the Brunswick YWCA. I served in almost every position at the “Y,” before becoming an Executive Director. I retired from the “Y” in 2012 after 28 years of service. Although I enjoyed each position there, my favorite position while working at the “Y” was Maintenance Director. Being the wife of a career Navy man, who was often away, I found I had a knack for fixing things. I love the “hands-on” approach maintenance provided me, and honed my skills by managing and maintaining an Olympic sized pool and natatorium, hot tubs, gymnasium, fitness centers, classrooms, and all the HVAC and equipment necessary to keep a 65,000 square foot facility running smoothly.

I was only retired about 3 months before deciding I wanted to help people. I received my CNA certification and began working at Addington Place. Although, I will always have a soft spot for my CNA work with Addington’s residents, I am finally back to my first love, maintenance. As Addington Place Maintenance Service Director, It is a daily challenge keeping everything in this fantastic community operating and looking perfect. Fortunately, the team at Addington Place feels the same as I do. Working here is a joy, plus I still get to interact with the residents. It’s a win-win!

I have been married to my husband, Buck, for forever. We share 2 children and 6 grandkids, and live in the middle of an Oak Forest in Darien, Georgia with our 2 dogs, cat, and fish.
