Meet Resident Mary Weaver, WWII Nurse | Oaks Senior Living
In light of National Nurse’s Week, and the many nurses that make up our teams and resident communities, it is important to honor their stories and life’s journey.
In light of National Nurse’s Week, and the many nurses that make up our teams and resident communities, it is important to honor their stories and life’s journey. The commitment made by our nurses to serving our residents with faith, knowledge, compassion, and love is essential in creating empowering and warm community environments. However, many of our residents at one point in their lives, offered similar value as they stewarded the role of nurse to the respective people they served. Meet Mary Weaver, one of those residents who served as a World War ll nurse.
Mary, resident of Oaks at Shiloh Point, served in the United States Navy as a nurse stationed at Great Lakes Naval Academy. She served until the war ended, helping our injured brave men and women that were brought back to the States for medical treatment.
She met her husband in the Navy Hospital. He oversaw identifying injured and deceased soldiers, and transporting them back to the hospitals. On June 6th, 1944, which we now call D-Day, his naval transport plane was shot down while transporting soldiers back to hospital. He became a patient himself and that is where he eventually met Mary. Mary served until the war was over.
They were later married and raised 4 children in the quaint town of Tipp City, Ohio. Mary remained a licensed nurse until 1982. Mary’s name is on a National Monument in Washington, DC honoring those women serving in World War II. She still retains many of her leadership qualities and is always willing to jump in and help with any tasks. We are proud and honored to have Mrs. Weaver reside at Oaks at Shiloh Point!
